Introduction

The client currently manages an app that alerts the general public about bushfires. However, the application has limited functionality, which restricts its ability to accommodate and support all types of users.

The clients would like to redesign and enhance the app's capabilities to support multiple emergency types, thereby creating a more unified user experience.

This will allow the general public to access accurate hazard information more easily.

The challenge

Currently, there are disconnections between the existing functionality of the application and its potential to support various implementations. The challenge is to enable a seamless user experience by incorporating multiple emergency alerts for fires, floods, heatwaves, storms, and waves. In the planning phase, we collaborated to create a scope list, which outlines features for enhanced customization in notification settings and map views. Also, by reimagining the app's flow, this ensures that communities near state borders can easily access information from neighbouring states.

Approach

  • Affinity mapping

  • Design system

  • Interactive prototype

  • Market research

  • Usability testing

  • WCAG 2.1 AA

  • Wireframing

  • Workshop facilitation

Role

Role: Product Designer

Timeline: 2 months

Platform: iOS

Tools: Figma, Dovetail, Miro

Process & contributions

The design sprint is divided into 4 major steps, with each week featuring a showcase to ensure effective stakeholder management.

Align

  • Conduct three major workshops to establish an understanding of the scope list, reach a common understanding of stakeholder expectations, and capture high-level technology requirements and capabilities.

  • Conduct desktop research on best-in-class app designs and gather global inspiration.

  • Extract relevant recommendations from the Royal Commission to ensure that the design meets nationalised standards.

  • Conduct accessibility research to ensure that the design meets WCAG 2.1 AA standards.

Create

  • Facilitate a half-day co-design workshop with stakeholders using Miro, enabling collaboration between stakeholders to rethink the application in a user-centric manner.

  • Create wireframes based on the workshop outcomes and present them during the showcase to align with stakeholders before proceeding to the prototype.

  • Create an iOS UI Kit in preparation for prototyping.

  • Define user testing requirements for the user recruitment process.

Prototype

  • Develop a high-fidelity prototype based on the wireframes and stakeholder feedback.

  • Create an interactive prototype for user testing.

  • Create a user testing plan, script, and scenarios.

  • Design a System Usability Scale (SUS) Survey to collect quantitative data.

User Testing

  • Conduct five moderated user testing sessions over two days, with each session lasting one hour.

  • Implement one round of design iteration based on user testing feedback.

  • Prepare the Design Sprint Report for the final showcase, ensuring the inclusion of relevant and detailed information for future usage.

Outcome

  • Successfully conducted 3 workshops to understand the scope, technical mapping, and collaboratively create app designs.

  • Created high-fidelity designs and prototypes based on your workshop input for a multi-hazard Alert SA app.

  • Successfully ran user testing with 5 participants with a SUS score of 85.
